The Hazel Branch

The Hazel Branch, Printmaking
The Hazel Branch
This is a relief monotype print based on the Grimms Fairy Tale “The Hazel Branch ''. The story of a handmaiden venturing into the woods to pick strawberries for her son. Before picking the berries an adder lunged at her, so she confidently hid behind a branch of hazel. Originally I pictured a hazelnut branch but illustrated this as witch hazel because it is known to repel snakes. I used Mikisyo Power Grip Carving Tools and experimented with different textures to recreate the adder (or venomous snake) hidden amongst the wild strawberry.
